HISTORY OF BASKETBALL Dr. James Naismith is known world-wide as the inventor of Basketball. He was born in 1861 in Ramsay township, near Almonte, Ontario, Canada. At the YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891 the sport known as basketball was born. In 1949 the National Basketball Association (NBA) was formed. The NBA offered us on-court champions, business enterprises, and even its shrine – the NBA hall of fame. Today Basketball has grown to become one of the world's most popular sports.
